"The goal of social justice education is full and equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs. Social justice includes a vision of society that is equitable and members are physically and psychologically safe and secure."
Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook. Edited by Maurianne Adams, Lee Anne Bell, and Pat Griffin
Often people don't nominate their colleagues or campus events because they don't feel as if they are worthy or as if they have done anything extraordinary. We feel that even the smallest actions can have a huge impact. We also recognize that different students and campus environments are in different places in terms of their acceptance and understanding of diverse social justice issues. With that in mind, we ask you to consider nominating the work of an individual or a collective group on your campus that has made a difference to your campus, your department, or in the lives of your students. It doesn't have to be worthy of a Nobel Prize; it just has to be something or someone that you believe has put your campus, department, staff, or students in a better place.
"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make, which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee." -Marian Wright Edelman
"If you add a little to a little and do this often, soon the little will become great." -Hesiod

New this year, we will be designating two restrooms as gender neutral restrooms, as well as identifying the adjoining lounge as a safe space, to better serve our membership at our annual conference! Look for information and signs when we see you in Topeka!
Please find us and social justice focused programs in the Pioneer Room throughout the conference! We will have information on the new initiatives we are pursuing, as well as friendly faces to welcome you to UMR! On your walk to and from the conference rooms, please take some time to read the Social Justice Timeline we have created. We believe there are many amazing social justice causes and our voices will be heard On the Horizon!
We will be hosting our annual Social Justice Cafe from 6-9 pm on Thursday, November 10, in the Pioneer Room! Please join us to catch up with your friends and to visit the Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site! We will be providing a free bus that will take people to and from the site every 15 minutes. It is completely free and is also self-guided, so you have the opportunity to explore it at your own pace. We will also have a passive Walk A Mile In Their Shoes display to connect with others' stories. Come for the food and drinks, check out the Brown v. Board site, and stay to connect with your colleagues across the region!
